A True New England Tradition – the Enchanted Village

The Traditional Spirit of Massachusetts Winter
Throughout the 60s and into the 70s, Jordan Marsh displayed The Enchanted Village in its Boston venue. The magical feature quickly became a fundamental centerpiece of New England’s seasonal holiday celebrations. Until 1972, at which point Jordan Marsh ended the exhibit, a trip to the Enchanted Village was a traditional event.
The Animated Feature returned to Greater Boston. In a funny turn it has ultimately ended up at Jordan’s Store,sharing a name with the store that created it originally. The Enchanted Village is now found in the Avon shop.
Originally, called The Enchanted Village of St. Nicholas, the winter display was made in the 50s. Back then, the Jordan Marsh Company commissioned a German toy maker to create the 28 colorfully decorated christmas scenes with 250 beautifully animated figures.
From Birth to Rebirth
For a long while, The Village was closed from the early 70s to its being reborn in 1990. Then, in the late 90s, when Macy’s stores purchased Jordan Marsh, the display was bought by Boston for City Hall Plaza. In 2003, shortfall of funds forced the Village to move to the Hynes Convention Center. In 2006, Boston stopped displaying The Enchanted Village altogether. In 2009, the Village was sold at auction.
A Winter Tradition Keeps Going
Graciously, Jordan’s Furniture bought the surviving pieces of the exhibit at auction in 2009 and restored the vintage collection to its original state. The surviving collection includes fifty-nine animatronic figures and about 20 scenes. The exhibit is on permanent display in Avon, and is open for all to enjoy in the holiday season.
How to Enjoy It
The wait for this display can be enormous so the ideal thing to do is to go during non-weekend days or visit well before the holidays hit. This is especially important if you have young kids who will get unhappy waiting in line.
One more thing that’s neat about this exhibit is that it involves a flurry of artificial snow falling at regular intervals, which makes it even more fun.
