image optimization is automated in a workflow involving between 4,000 and 6,000 images a week. This saves the Group millions every year – without compromising on quality.
Is it possible to
automate digital image enhancement and still making the result as well, and with the same high quality, as if the work was made manually? If you ask Thomas Culmsee, IT Department Manager at Aller Media, the answer is a definite ‘yes’.
In a fiercely competitive market, no company – whether large or small – can allow itself to rest on its laurels, but the challenge was to find the right solution. Aller contacted several international suppliers of graphics software solutions in the market, but in the end chose the Danish company,
Caramba Imaging, who work with
Adobe InDesign.
“Indeed, at the time, back in 2007, the solution offered by Caramba Imaging was relatively new on the market and it is also somewhat of an exaggeration to say that it was completely ready. So, we were also one of the first customers. However, the developers were quickly able to empathise with the requirements of a major publishing house like us with our voluminous and specialised workflow,” says Thomas Culmsee.
Automating the graphic workflow for a publisher’s such as Aller has been a challenge that has resulted in a high level of specialised adjustment. For instance, there is a big difference between the images in a lifestyle magazine such as
Mad & Bolig where a lot of care is lavished on the smallest detail in the photo studio and a series of premium images in
Se & Hør, at least if the
image analysis is to be done automatically.
Because of this, Caramba Imaging has as an example constructed an algorithm to deal with images publishers call “red carpet images”, i.e. images photographed in the evening using flashbulbs and where the sole motive is for the person or couple in question to be optimised whilst the background remains dark. Otherwise, the system will normally intervene and illuminate the entire image.
“We have been able to specifically request that kind of set-up from Caramba Imaging and they have fulfilled our requirements admirably,” says Thomas Culmsee, adding that, generally, they are very pleased with the integration of the editorial system .
Every week, Aller enhances between
4,000 and 6,000 images. These days, this is completely automated via Caramba Imaging Service which has been installed as an
image enhancement plug-in for InDesign. The solution is hosted on Aller’s own servers which have been specially adapted for the specific requirements of a weekly as well as a magazine .
In overall terms, the project of optimising weekly and magazine production has resulted in not inconsiderable savings on the employee side.
